Royal Resolutions

Remember the Prince Harry of yore?  Life of the party, fueled by high-octane alcohol…

Today's Prince Harry is literally and figuratively more sober.  And why?  In word or two: Meghan Markle.

Since marrying Meghan, Harry has come around to her way of living.  This includes giving up alcohol, as well as tea and coffee.  It also means “doing a bit of yoga.”

The ghosts of Christmas past have not cast their shadows upon Harry this year.  On his way “into church on Christmas Day,” he looked the picture of health.

Keeping the Faith

James Mattis   (DOD photo)
Politics aside, keeping the faith in America’s highest principles is what has made our nation great.

In his farewell address to the troops, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis urged them to “keep the faith in our country,” despite its current volatility.

As Mattis sees it, such faith involves upholding “the Constitution while protecting our way of life.”  He also reminded troops that difficult times can bring out the best in humanity.

Being an avid student of history, Mattis quoted Lincoln’s “one-line telegram” to then-General Ulysses S. Grant.  It stated:  Let nothing which is transpiring change, hinder, or delay your military movements, or plans.

During the new year, when promises abound, civilians can also learn a thing or two from such steadfast resolve.

Ultima Journey

New Horizons   (NASA photo)_
If NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft flies by Ultima Thule on January 1st, this will be a happy new year, indeed.

In case you’ve been hiding beneath a different rock, Ultima Thule is “a planetary body about the size of Orlando [Florida] in a region beyond Pluto.”  This makes it NASA’s farthest fly-by yet.

From this primitive space rock, scientists are hoping to discover more about the building blocks of our solar system.  Stay tuned, for this event will be broadcast, despite the partial shut-down of federal agencies.
